Example Specifications for Mass Timber Panels
WoodWorks has developed general mass timber panel specifications to serve as an example and starting point for project-specific specifications. The types of mass timber panels include cross-laminated timber (CLT), glue-laminated timber (GLT), nail-laminated timber (NLT), and dowel-laminated timber (DLT).
This document follows the three-part Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) format specification for mass timber panels, providing a comprehensive guide for their use in construction projects. Part 1 – General outlines the scope, standards, and administrative requirements, including quality assurance and coordination among stakeholders. Part 2 – Products specifies the properties of the panels, such as structural grades, appearance classifications, finishes, and accepted manufacturers, ensuring materials meet design and performance criteria. Part 3 – Execution details the installation procedures, including handling, storage, anchoring, and finishing requirements, to ensure safe and efficient integration of the panels into the structure while maintaining their integrity and aesthetics.
These examples are not finalized specifications to be used as-is in the project specifications. There are many ways to design and procure mass timber panels, including types of delegated design, as well as many requirements related to fire-resistance ratings, and variability between different mass timber panel types. As the example specifications cover a wide range of products and procurement models, the specs must be customized for each project.
The example specification includes guidance on the variations and links to resources to assist in the design and specification process.
